If you are feeling overwhelmed with the paint choices out there (never mind the endless colour options), take a breath. We are here to make your life a little bit easier, starting with some ground rules when it comes to choosing the right paint finish for your home.

What do we mean when we say ‘paint finish’? Sheen, or paint finish, is a measure of how much light reflects off a painted surface, resulting in a shiny gloss — or lack thereof (matte). Some suppliers offer many different levels of sheen, including flat, matte, eggshell, pearl, satin, semi-gloss and high gloss. At Olympic, we like to keep things simple by offering three luxurious finishes, each geared towards a different look and application.

Let’s start with matte. A matte paint finish does not reflect a lot of light, resulting in little to no sheen. This lack of reflection allows more paint pigment to come through, is more forgiving of flaws and allows for excellent hide (or coverage), creating a uniform surface. Olympic’s Suburban Bliss finish is a highly durable Acrylic PVA that can be used in both interior and exterior spaces. Expect superior coverage and a smooth matte finish. 

If you are looking for that creamy, velvet feeling with a mid range sheen (silky but not too shiny) then our Natural Elegance coating is the way forward. Suitable for interior and exterior use, it comes with an opulent feel and excellent washing and scrubbing properties, making it ideal for hardworking kitchens as well as sumptuous lounge spaces. This product is also perfect for door and window trims, offering a bit more of a polished look to the space, without being too glossy.

What about the outdoors? Our Rugged Beauty option comes with a tough micatex coating. This is a fancy way of saying the paint has been reinforced with mica and marble, giving the product a highly durable, textured finish. Ideal for exteriors as well as feature walls, it creates an interesting play on light without bouncing it back onto the viewer.
